When Afterwood approached CH Biomass earlier this year to supply and install a boiler they didn’t need to be convinced of the benefits of biomass. This Lincolnshire based business has been supplying wood fuel and animal bedding to farms, hospitals, schools, equestrian centres and commercial businesses nationwide for over six years.
Keen to improve the efficiency of supply of their dry virgin wood chip this growing business were looking for a biomassboiler and drying floor for their site. Challenged with building a plant room and fitting the installation into an existing agricultural barn, CH Biomass built and installed a 500kW Froling Turbomat boiler and massive 15m x 6m drying floor at the site.
With a capacity of 90m3 the drying floor cleverly blows hot air created by the boiler up through the wood chip and speeds up the drying process. Within just 30 hours the heated floor reduces the moisture content of the chips from 50% to an acceptable 30% allowing Afterwood to supply quality fuel, quicker than ever before.
CH Biomass worked against the clock to deliver the installation and with an RHI degression looming even Storm Doris didn’t stop construction – the team were proud to complete this project and manage the RHI application within just 6 weeks.
The CH Biomass service engineers continue to support and maintain the plant at Afterwood and ensure that site staff are trained to manage the system.
“After six years of supplying woodchip and wood pellets to boilers of all makes and sizes, we decided it was time to get our own boiler and drying system. We were also aware that some of our customers had experienced problems with boiler installation and breakdowns in the past so we chose our suppliers carefully. It was clear that the Froling boiler ticked all of the boxes for us and having built a good relationship with Ed it was the best choice for CH Biomass to install it. From start to finish the build went smoothly and even finished ahead of schedule. The boiler is performing better than our expectations and we value the continued support we receive from Ed and his team.” Jonathan Afterwood – Director, Afterwood
